Sea Shepherd UK has policies and will take measures at any time to safeguard against any of the following being committed against members of the public or indeed Sea Shepherd staff or volunteers:
- Racism, sexism and/or religious hate speech
- Threats of, or actual violence to any person (or animal)
Sea Shepherd UK operates without prejudice towards race, colour, nationality, religious belief, or any other consideration except for an impartial adherence to upholding international conservation law to protect endangered marine species and ecosystems. Sea Shepherd UK does not condone or tolerate support of recognised racial or religious ‘hate groups’.
Our UK volunteers come from all backgrounds and Sea Shepherd Crewmembers and Volunteers come from all over the world including from countries where we oppose poaching or habitat destruction.
Sea Shepherd is not anti any nationality or culture. We are pro-wildlife/habitat and we oppose poachers / illegal operations and those who exploit habitats, endanger protected marine or freshwater wildlife or pollute rivers, seas and oceans.
Sea Shepherd is not a Vegan or Vegetarian outreach group. However, all of the food served on board Sea Shepherd Vessels at sea and on UK campaigns is vegan because of:
- The strong environmental arguments to do so
- Our support from the animal rights community
- To counteract the ‘cultural’ arguments for eating meat
- The high proportion of vegan crewmembers on board Sea Shepherd ships and the need to simplify our menu on board.
Sea Shepherd donations therefore are never used to purchase meat or animal derived products for our fleet of ships.
Sea Shepherd’s greatest strength is that we reflect the desire of the broadest sections of society to protect our oceans and marine wildlife. As such, it is important that ALL Sea Shepherd supporters and volunteers are made to feel welcome regardless of their lifestyle/dietary habits. Support for our mission statement should be the main prerequisite for somebody being made to feel welcome by Sea Shepherd.
Sea Shepherd UK will provide only Vegan food at events where we are the organiser to match the policy of Sea Shepherd ships.
Sea Shepherd UK inevitably has stands at some events each year organised by other groups where catering by the organisers or other stallholders may include meat and animal products. Sea Shepherd UK attends such events to provide outreach to members of the public who may not be aware of Sea Shepherd or marine conservation issues. Sea Shepherd UK volunteers who are Vegan/Vegetarian may (as is their right) choose to not attend such events for Sea Shepherd.
Sea Shepherd UK's board (in common with all other registered charities) will take measures at any time to safeguard our volunteers, staff and members of the public against discrimination. Sea Shepherd UK utilises the Equality Act 2010 to define equal opportunities and various forms of discrimination. Sea Shepherd UK therefore does not allow discrimination against any person in regards to the protected characteristics of:
- marital / civil partnership status
- pregnancy / maternity
- religion or belief
- sexual orientation
“Sea Shepherd operates outside the petty cultural chauvinism of the human species. Our clients are whales, dolphins, seals, turtles, sea-birds, and fish - we represent only their interests”
- Captain Paul Watson
